Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro Review: Choose PoE or Wi-Fi Before the Ecosystem

Exact identity: PoE and Wi-Fi are different installations

Aqara sells G5 Pro PoE and Wi-Fi variants. The core published imaging specification includes 2688×1520 resolution, a 1/1.8-inch sensor, f/1.0 aperture and 133-degree diagonal field of view. The connection and power path differ materially.

Camera and night-image claims

Aqara describes 2.6K Quad HD, True Color Night Vision, a spotlight and local AI recognition. The large published aperture and sensor are relevant inputs, but specifications do not prove how a face, plate, pet or package will appear at a particular distance under motion, rain, glare or mixed lighting.

Define the evidence target before mounting:

1. Draw the exact zone that must be visible.
2. Measure near, middle and far decision distances.
3. Identify backlighting, headlights and reflective surfaces.
4. Decide whether the goal is detection, recognition or identification.
5. Test daytime, dusk, full darkness and spotlight behavior during the return window.

A wide field can cover more scene while allocating fewer pixels to a distant subject. Do not use the camera’s headline resolution as a promise of identification at the property boundary.

HomeKit Secure Video and native Aqara recording

The G5 Pro can integrate with Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video, while Aqara also provides its own app, local eMMC storage and cloud services. These paths do not necessarily expose identical resolution, event types, retention, export or live-view behavior.

Create a recording matrix rather than assuming “supports HomeKit” settles it:

Current owner discussions repeatedly focus on continuous recording, subscription boundaries and differences between Aqara and Home timelines. Those discussions identify questions; they do not establish universal behavior. Confirm current documentation and test the exact account/firmware combination.

Hub placement versus camera placement

The G5 Pro’s Zigbee and Thread radios can reduce the need for a separate Aqara hub. It can act as a Thread border router and Matter controller, but Matter compatibility does not make every Aqara feature portable to every ecosystem.

Camera placement favors sightline, weather protection, mounting security and power/network access. Hub placement favors radio coverage near sensors and other devices. Those maps may disagree. Before consolidating:

• mark current Zigbee and Thread devices on a floor plan;
• locate metal, masonry and dense exterior walls;
• verify whether powered routers/repeaters fill the route;
• test the proposed camera location temporarily;
• confirm which automations run locally and which require a service;
• preserve a recovery route if the combined camera/hub is offline.

One device can simplify the inventory while increasing the impact of one reboot or failure.

Local AI and automation boundaries

Aqara lists local recognition of faces, vehicles, pets, sounds and other events, with automation triggers in Aqara Home. Local processing can reduce cloud dependence for supported functions, but it does not mean every feature, clip or notification remains local. Nor does “AI” guarantee correct recognition.

Treat each automation as a safety case. A detected vehicle may turn on lights; it should not unlock a door without a deliberate secure control path. A missed or false event should not create danger. Record the trigger, conditions, action, timeout, manual override and failure state.

Test notifications with multiple household members and quiet hours. Confirm whether recognition data is stored, how it is deleted and which account roles can change it.

Privacy and security checklist

The camera covers people and property, so installation is partly a governance decision:

• aim away from spaces the household has no reason to record;
• use unique credentials and multi-factor authentication where available;
• update firmware through the documented Aqara path;
• restrict account roles and review shared access;
• document cloud, local and Apple retention separately;
• test deletion and export before an incident;
• place network equipment on an appropriate segmented network if the home design supports it;
• comply with local notice, audio-recording and neighboring-property rules.

Aqara states end-to-end encryption for footage sent to Apple and Aqara clouds and cites an IoT-security certification. Verify the scope and current service terms; neither statement eliminates account, device-placement or network risk.

Installation and lifecycle

The stand can be placed on surfaces or mounted to walls/ceilings, but the final orientation must keep the intended image upright and the cable protected. For PoE, use compliant equipment and outdoor-appropriate routing. For Wi-Fi, confirm the power adapter and weather-protected connection—an outdoor-rated camera does not make every connector or extension arrangement outdoor-safe.

Before drilling, temporarily mount the camera, run live view and saved-event tests, and verify hub coverage. Record the device identifier, variant, firmware, installation date, cable route and reset procedure. Keep the support guide accessible without relying on the camera itself.

Choose the variant, build the recording matrix, test the real scene and prove outage recovery. If those pass, the combined hub can reduce hardware. If camera and radio maps conflict, separate devices are the safer architecture.
